Who we are
United European Car Carriers (UECC) has its roots in the distinguished Ugland shipping family of Norway and was founded in its present form in 1990 under the joint 50:50 ownership of NYK and Wallenius Lines.
UECC’s evolution over subsequent decades saw the company extend its European trading network with the opening of new offices and terminals in the UK, Spain and Greece, grow its workforce and expand its fleet with additional high-capacity newbuilds and chartered-in vessels.
Rapid expansion of the company’s business was in line with massive growth in global seaborne trade from the 1990s onwards, while UECC also had to navigate market headwinds due to economic and geopolitical volatility, a global financial crisis and the challenges of the Covid pandemic. The annual cargo volume transported by UECC exceeded 2 million units for the first time in 2006.
While overcoming these market challenges, UECC positioned itself as a first-mover in the industry push for decarbonization driven by IMO and EU regulations through a proactive strategy of newbuild investments, technological innovation and alternative fuel adoption.
The company ordered the world’s first two dual-fuel LNG PCTCs that were delivered in 2016, followed by deliveries in 2021-2022 of a new breed of three multi-fuel LNG battery hybrid PCTCs. UECC has set a new standard for eco-friendly maritime transport by expanding its fleet with advanced vessels designed for energy efficiency and sustainability to bolster its position as the leading provider of sustainable short sea RoRo transport in Europe.
